UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US...

The award-winning film ’Until The Light Takes Us’, tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans world-wide. Until The Light Takes Us goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanists running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.

Opens in Cardiff on Friday 19th March at The Chapter Arts Centre, Market Road.

NEW THIS WEEK...

Released to coincide with their first live appearances in 10 years, this Pavement compilation presents the much adored Californian Anglophiles’ finest material from the period 1989-1999. The UK hit singles ’Stereo’ and ’Cut Your Hair’ are included here alongside a wealth of lesser-known tracks from the Pavement canon.
The second album from Pitchfork favourites Titus Andronicus. A hugely ambitious concept album about the American Civil War out on Merok Records.
The Besnard Lakes’ twisting chronicle, or fevered dream, of spies, double agents, novelists and aspiring rock gods has turned violent.
’Tomorrow In A Year’ is an experimental soundtrack to a 90-minute Danish opera based intriguingly on Charles Darwin’s ’Origin Of The Species’ created by Swedish avant-garde electronic duo The Knife, who team up with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock on this project. The glitchy electronics and the sonic exploration of sound astonishingly combine with the burbling of a mezzo-soprano, resulting in a fascinating and bubbling analog accompaniment to Darwin’s world-shattering words on the stage.
Also out this week is the ultimate all access pass to Flogging Molly’s epic performance at the legendary Greek Theatre. Three disc set: two audio CDs featuring over 90 minutes of live Flogging Molly, plus a full length concert DVD shot in crystal clear HD and 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound, all the band’s music videos, including the brand new video for ’Punch Drunk Grinning Soul’, and a candid and exclusive pre-show interview.
New Young Pony Club are a four-piece dance/punk band from London, who formed in 2005 after singer Tahita Bulmer and guitarist/producer Andy Spence were introduced and discovered a mutual love of dance and punk music. Their debut album was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2007, as well as winning other awards and being highly acclaimed by the British music press. ’The Optimist’ is a darker, heavier affair than their previous work, and is a move away from the sound of their debut.
Gonjasufi - A spectacular debut from the depths of the Mojave desert, moulded by a trio of the West Coast’s finest producers. This spectacular album has already stirred interest in the mainstream and independent media, with The Guardian Guide calling it "a contender for album of the year...a cosmic headtrip sounding like Screamin’ Jay Hawkins covering MIA, as remixed by Portishead. In a good way".
‘Kairos, Dead Oceans Kairos’ is the second full album from White Hinterland, the experimental pop project from songwriter, vocalist and sometime pianist Casey Dienel. In this instance Dienel abandons her piano and pursues accompaniment from minimal, looping electronic arrangements. Comparisons to The XX and Dirty Projectors have cropped up in text about this band, and you can hear where some of that comes from, but there’s undoubtedly a more simplified, elemental quality to this music that perfectly serves Dienel’s incredibly pure and melodic voice.
’No Guts No Glory’ is the second album from hard rocking Australian outfit Airbourne. Relocating back to their home town of Warrnambool, Victoria, the band set about writing the follow up to 2007’s acclaimed ’Runnin’ Wild’ in the hotel where they played their first ever gigs. Recorded in Chicago with Johnny K (Disturbed, 3 Doors Down, Drowning Pool) the album sees the quartet deliver another slab of classic "Aussie Pub Rock" in the vein of AC/DC and Cold Chisel.
Tara Burke’s work as Fursaxa has always explored the more interesting outer edges of free-folk, sidestepping the default singer-songwriter tendencies that come with the turf and instead embarking upon a series of dark, witchy albums populated by bedroom-recorded bouts of accordion, dulcimer and ethereal vocals. The lo-fi DIY aesthetics of old are out the door for this latest release, however; Mycorrhizae Realm marks Burke’s first studio-based solo album, and it seems to have come about from her work as part of The Valerie Project. She’s joined by fellow members of that side-project Greg Weeks (the Espers frontman who produces the album), Helena Espvall (cello) and Mary Lattimore (harp and co-writing on two songs)
Going Places is the very final studio album from Yellow Swans. Yellow Swans have a devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic and have long been championed by the likes of Pitchfork. This album is the band’s most astonishing full-length to date, conjoining visceral noise drones with an epic yet introspective pop sensibility.
Welsh record label Red Eye Music release this album of Haitian Voodoo drumming in aid of the Haiti earthquake disaster. Recorded over two nights in down town Port Au Prince, Haiti Vodou: The Voodoo Drums of Haiti presents a raw and heated introduction to the world of Vodou drumming (the sacred rhythms of spirit possession) via authentic field recordings.
New Zealander Andrew Thomas is one of the mainstays of Kompakt’s ambient roster. His ability to evoke the beauty of his New Zealand countryside in his music is a remarkable feat and a must hear. Dramatic and engrossing, his sophomore album "between buildings and trees" is destined to be a benchmark effort to rank alongside the likes of Wolfgang Voigt/Gas, Fennesz, Vladislav Delay and William Basinski.
For the eleventh installment of Rinse’s highly praised mix series, DJ Oneman holds down a 27-track ride around the ends of mutant Funky and dubstep. Over the last three years his sets have been hugely valued for their blend of functions, mixing sweetened old-skool garage flavours with the freshest Funky and dubstep. His regular slot on Rinse has become the show to check for those in the know, garnering respect from peers like Kode 9, Blackdown and Geeneus.
Formed in Cardiff, Die! Chihuahua Die! play a chaotic mix of riff heavy high energy, garage rock influenced hardcore punk n’roll. Since 2008, the band have been recording and playing shows non-stop, their explosive gigs have involved a hurricane of destroyed drumkits, broken guitars, blood and good times. They have established themselves as one of the bands to watch during 2010.
The brainchild of iconic singer Damon Album and Tank Girl co-creator Jamie Hewlett, Gorillaz are made up of mysterious and imaginative cartoon characters. While the image is powerful, it is the music that has ultimately made this project such a multi-million selling success. Albarn’s ability to diversify musically shows no signs of slowing down on ’Plastic Beach’, the follow-up to 2005’s ’Demon Days’. Collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Gruff Rhys, De La Soul, Little Dragon and more make this a truly special album. The bonus DVD features the making of ’Plastic Beach’.
Welsh indie-rockers The Automatic release the first album from their own label, Armoured Records, titled ’Tear The Signs Down’. Their third effort reverts toward the sound of their debut ’Not Accepted Anywhere’, combining synth hooks with big rock choruses, while still diversifying their sound. This is Paul Mullen’s second full album with the band and his presence is evident here on the frequent three part harmonies that he shares with Robin Hawkins and James Frost.
Nigeria 1970. Highlife, Afro-beat, Rock, Jazz & Native Blues rub shoulders and are turned out at an unprecedented level. New styles meet old styles. Newfound national confidence follows the near break-up of the nation following the Biafran war. New fashions meet old fashions, creating new fusions. Soundway present a second volume of 19 original and previously un-reissued tracks from the time. Obscure A-sides, B-sides & album cuts that have resisted a second look until now.
Having been joined by drummer Leah Shapiro of The Raveonettes, San Francisco rockers Black Rebel Motorcycle Club follow-up to 2008’s instrumental and experimental record ’The Effects Of 333’. Returning to the melodic country gospel of ’Howl’ (2005), while also referring heavily to their self-titled 2001 debut’s hard-hitting sound, ’Beat The Devil’s Tattoo’ is a powerful record full of fuzzy bass and guitar swagger. Peter Hayes and Robert Been sound as determined and relentless as ever.
‘Broken Bells’ is the debut album from the duo of James Mercer, frontman of The Shins, and Brian Burton aka Danger Mouse, probably best known as half of Gnarls Barkley. Both successful musicians in their own right, the pair met at the 2004 Roskilde Festival and bonded over a mutual appreciation of each other’s work, before finally teaming up four years later to write music together. The resulting album combines lo-fi indie pop with sampladelic beats, funk and experimental electronic sounds.
Fifth album from the American experimental rockers Liars, their follow-up to 2007’s self-titled effort, which combined a new metallic brutalism with the punk tempos of their debut and the art-rock of the following two records. On this release the heavy punkiness remains, but it also has almost a dance feel on some tracks, and a host of new sounds are present, including massively overdriven synth bass and ghostly choral vocals.
