Islet - Liquid Half Moon EP Artist Islet
Title Liquid Half Moon EP [12"]
Label Shape
Islet are a four piece collaborative band from Wales. Formed in Cardiff in 2009, the band has no lead singer or set roles, switching instruments from song to song. Pitchfork described their sound as “unhinged, euphoric, wonderful” and NME as "a model of how a left-leaning rock band ought to conduct themselves”.

This EP was self-produced by the band, recorded in John Thomas’ own studio in the hills of Radnorshire, mid-Wales, which he set up with his brother Lee in 2006.
In the run-up to the release, the band have shared the opening track, ‘Cathays Terrors.’  The title is a nod to the student area of the Welsh capital, and presents a pulsating, thrilling art-rock voyage.  Jam-packed with ideas, including wobbly synths, an earworm of a guitar riff and floaty vocals, it’s an invigorating insight into what to expect from the new EP.

Islet - Released By The Movement Artist Islet
Title Released By The Movement
Label Shape
On this record they “go free”. They sing of their love and of their anger, and the joy and pain of their “obsessive need to freak” (Carlos). They sing without words at all, as the record plunges into the more nocturnal sounding depths of Tripping Through The Blue Room (Part II). Woven together by John Thomas’s guitar and Alex Williams’s bass, this track is seized by the almost gothic dread that snakes through the record. These songs were recorded with the band’s good friend Stephen Black – also known as the artist Sweet Baboo. With Black on the controls, the album was recorded and mixed in practice spaces and bedrooms in Cardiff with no engineers or outside input, giving the group the freedom to work without inhibition, recording stream-of-consciousness sonic journeys alongside unruly maximalist adventures. Islet reinvent themselves with every song, playing each others instruments, drumming over drums and splashing sonic colours over each others parts.

Iwan Artist Dafydd Iwan
Title Dos I Ganu [#DyddMiwsigCymru]
Label Sain
Dafydd Iwan sings 11 songs on his new album “Dos i ganu”, 7 of which are brand new compositions, 2 recent songs by Tudur Huws Jones, one traditional love song, and also new lyrics by Dafydd to “You raise me up”, which he dedicates to his wife Bethan for helping him through the dark days.
The album, together with the title-song, was inspired by a banner placed on a bridge in Caernarfon during the May 2008 elections, following the furore caused by a plan to re-organise Gwynedd schools. “I was the whipping-boy then”, says Dafydd, “ so there is inevitably a personal and political undercurrent to many of these songs, sometimes in earnest, but often in more frivolous vein.” One song sure to raise a few smiles (and possibly a few grimaces) is “Mwstasho y gaucho”, the words by an anonymous poet, possibly with Patagonian links, but possibly about a real-life person. Dafydd invites suggestions!
For the first time ever, Dafydd expresses his anti-war views from the point of view of a Welsh soldier injured in Iraq, “What is worse to my mind than sending our young people to die in war, “says Dafydd, “ is to send them to die in an illegal war such as the Iraq war”.
Another theme running through many of these tracks is the power of the song, and how songs can boost the spirits and help keep the faith.
